March Message from the Chair of the New Lawyer Division

Greetings NLD,

Happy Women’s History Month! During the month of March, the United States recognizes and celebrates women’s so often overlooked contributions to U.S. history. This year is particularly momentous, for a new heading will be added to the history books as we celebrate the election of the first ever woman Vice President of the United States. Although there are many incredible women contributors in our profession, past and present, this month’s Tips from the Bench column features Judge Pamela Parker, Supervising Judge for San Diego Superior Court’s North County Division. I hope you’ll check out the article wherein Judge Pamela Parker discusses overcoming gender-based obstacles and pays tribute to the women lawyers and change makers who inspire her.

Switching gears, it has officially been over a year since COVID-19 related stay-at-home orders were first implemented and in-person events ceased. As three weeks turned into over a year, we begin to see a light at the end of the tunnel, and I can’t wait to finally get NLD back together again, face to face. In the meantime, we continue to try to provide fun ways to connect and, for those of you who made it last week, I hope you had a great time at our virtual Trivia Night! We also have a real treat for you coming up on May 4, 2020 — a Cinco de Mayo themed virtual cooking/drink making demonstration by our very own Chris Champine!

As mental health and so much more is tested through these isolating times, I want to remind you all that you are not alone. NLD is here for you, and if there is anything that we can do to support you, please do not hesitate to reach out or make suggestions. For an inspiring read on the great success of an attorney with bipolar disorder, check out Omid Rejali’s inspiring journey and words of wisdom in this month’s Member Spotlight article!

Finally, I am excited to announce the appointment of this year’s Vice Chair and next year’s Chair of NLD, Jake Zindulka! Jake is passionate about providing law students and new lawyers the support and tools they need to be successful, and I am confident that he will do a fantastic job leading the NLD as Vice Chair and as your Chair next year.

Thank you for reading and I hope to see you at our next event!

Sincerely,
Stephanie Atkinson
