Message from the Chair of the New Lawyer Division

Happy Spooky Season, NLD!

I love October. I feel like it’s the perfect month because the beginning is usually still pretty warm (or in true 2020 style, unbearably hot), but by the end of the month it’s cool and cozy.  The perfect time to light a fire in a fire place, or maybe just a few candles around your apartment. It’s also a time to begin to reflect on the year we’ve had and look forward to the year to come.

The end of September marked the beginning of the Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashana. For those who celebrate, this holiday typically begins a period of time to wish for a sweet and prosperous new year, make amends with others, seek forgiveness for personal shortcomings, and reflect on how to do better in the next year. Right before the holiday began, the world lost a legal giant – Ruth Bader Ginsberg. It is said in Jewish tradition that people who die right before Rosh Hashana are the most virtuous because they are given the merit of living for a full year and pass before the beginning of the next.

Ruth Bader Ginsberg was a personal hero of mine. I have several RBG figurines that sit on my desk and encourage me daily to be a light unto the world. I read a book titled “I Look Up to Ruth Bader Ginsberg” to my 7-month-old once a week. To me, Ruth represented so much more than just a legal maven. She was a person whose values I hope to emulate and pass on to my daughter: kindness – even in disagreements, justice – through clever argument, and to strive for an equal society – always. She was a person who valued her family, her health, and her community. I feel honored to have lived in her lifetime.

One way to honor her memory is to gather together as a community.  Although true gatherings are not possible, NLD is doing our best to simulate the in-person experience with NLD’s Annual Signature Event: FACE-MASK-ERADE on FRIDAY OCTOBER 30, 2020!

I am so excited that NLD’s Annual Signature Event is BACK. Even though this year looks a bit different, this evening is going to be AWESOME. And don’t worry, this is NOT another Zoom meeting. We’re using a new platform called REMO that allows YOU to move around from virtual table to virtual table, just like pre-COVID life!

So, grab a face mask, some glue, maybe a few rhinestones or feathers, and come dressed to impress! There’s a costume contest with PRIZES on the line! But, if costumes aren’t your thing, that’s cool. We’ll be providing a trick-or-treat bag with recipes for our signature cocktail, appetizer, and dessert that you can make at home. (Plus other goodies…) You won’t want to miss this.  All SDCBA members and guests are welcome.  Oh, and did I mention? REGISTRATION IS FREE!

FACE-MASK-ERADE registration can be found here or on NLD’s Facebook page.

As always, SDCBA and NLD are here for you. Make sure you’re following NLD on Facebook (formerly New Lawyers Forum)! You can always find the latest and greatest about what the Bar is offering there.

                                                                                                Best,
