Message from the Chair of the NLD

Hi Everyone,

May is Mental Health Awareness Month. Mental health is a vital part of our overall health and well-being. Unfortunately, mental health issues among lawyers are prevalent. That is likely due to the stress and demands of our profession (which is added to anything happening in our personal lives). Many lawyers are deterred from seeking professional help and talking about their struggles with others because of the stigma around mental health.

We should all do our part to disbar that stigma. I’ve sought help from mental health professionals. It’s akin to seeking any other medical help. And to seek help or to talk about your struggles with others — whether medical professionals, colleagues, friends, or family — demonstrates courage and strength, not weakness or incompetence.

I encourage you to check out SDCBA’s articles, videos, and programs on wellness. The State Bar of California also runs the Lawyer Assistance Program. Their confidential program offers free assessments of your situation and can assist you in getting the help you need, whether it’s for mental health issues, substance use issues, or career transition.

Claudia Ignacio, recipient of this year’s Service by a New Lawyer Award, emphasizes the importance of mental health to succeeding in law and in life. Read her NLD Member Spotlight to learn how Ignacio, a Mexican immigrant, raised her four younger siblings as a young adult and worked as a paralegal before attending law school and becoming a tax attorney.

This month’s Tips from the Bench features Judge CJ Mody who, as a native of India, is the first South Asian American judge appointed to San Diego Superior Court.

In the current For the Record, you can also learn about legal journalism, tips for social media marketing, and advice on pro bono volunteering. And if you haven’t already, be sure to ask a law or career-related question anonymously through our Asked and Answered page co-hosted by San Diego Lawyer magazine.

It always helps me to connect with others. That is why I’m excited for the SDCBA and NLD’s Summer Social at the Waterfront Park on July 13 from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. (more details to follow)! NLD is also planning a meet-up at Balboa Park for June and another Court Practice Series later this summer.

Please reach out to me if you have any questions, suggestions, concerns, or want to chat over coffee sometime.

Sincerely,

Jake
