President’s Message: January 21, 2020

Throughout the SDCBA’s 120-year history, we have had countless great leaders at the forefront of our legal community. To preserve that rich history, the SDCBA’s Bar History Committee oversees the “Legends of the Bar” project—a video interview series in which such “legends” tell their stories and provide inspiration for future generations. The Bar History Committee is seeking nominations for the 2020 Legends of the Bar project. To view past interviews, click here. Please provide nominations including background information as to qualifications for potential “legends” to Spencer.Scott@sdcounty.ca.gov. The nomination period closes on February 1, 2020.

Speaking of leaders in our community, today I’d like to highlight the impressive leadership of Judge Lorna Alksne, who began her term on January 1, 2020 as Presiding Judge of the San Diego Superior Court. She is only the third woman to hold that leadership post. The court’s new Assistant Presiding Judge is Michael T. Smyth.  Presiding Judge Alksne has made the following leadership appointments at the Superior Court:  Hon. Randa Trapp, Supervising Judge for Civil; Hon. Margo Lewis Hoy, Supervising Judge for Family; Hon. Ana L. España, Supervising Judge for Juvenile; Hon. Eugenia Eyherabide, Supervising Judge for Criminal; Hon. Evan P. Kirvin, Supervising Judge for East County; Hon. Sim von Kalinowski, Supervising Judge for North County; and Hon. Dwayne Moring, Supervising Judge for the South County.

We congratulate these judicial officers and look forward to a great year ahead, and thank former Presiding Judge Peter Deddeh for his previous leadership of the court. For a list of all San Diego Superior Court judges and their current assignments, click here. And if you’re interested in meeting some of these judges and going behind the scenes for a Q&A with KNSD-NBC 7, please join us at this bench-bar event on January 28, at 12pm.

As our legal community grows and evolves, it is important to take a moment to connect with each other and those seeking to join the profession. The Law Student Welcome Reception and Legal Community Open House is a wonderful occasion to do just that. This signature event on January 29 is a valuable networking opportunity to connect with San Diego attorneys from a variety of practice areas, SDCBA Section, Committee & Division chairs, and leaders of specialty bar associations. Law students, I encourage you to come out and connect with leaders in the community. Fellow attorneys, I hope to see you there. Click here to register.

Thank you for being part of the SDCBA community and have a great week!
