President’s Message: June 29, 2020

One of the SDCBA’s core values is Celebration. Even amidst the rapid changes and significant challenges facing our community and country, we believe it is important to celebrate the profession and our members. This Wednesday, July 1 at 12:00 p.m., the SDCBA and the Federal Bar Association-San Diego Chapter will host a special program, Celebrating Our Newest Colleagues, to welcome recent bar passers into San Diego’s vibrant legal community. Join me for inspiring remarks from representatives from our courts and bar associations, including California Court of Appeal Justice Judith McConnell, Southern District Chief Judge Larry Burns, FBA-San Diego Chapter President David Finn, and SDCBA New Lawyer Division Chair Stephanie Sandler. You are all welcome (even if your “bar passer” date was years ago)! Please join us in celebrating all of our newest colleagues and the profession. Register here »

And there’s more to come. The next two weeks are full of great events, including:

Plus, the first event in our reimagined, virtual Breakouts with the Bench series – Civil Law – is next Wednesday, July 8 at 12:00 p.m. Join us and connect with judges and fellow attorneys in virtual breakout rooms for thought-provoking conversation and relationship building. Limited space remains, so register today. And, following that, we’ll host a Breakouts with the Bench – Criminal Law event on July 27 at noon. Registration for that one is open here.

The digital version of San Diego Lawyer magazine went live last week, celebrating Women in the Law. It will be in your physical mailbox soon, too. Relating to our cover topic, we hope you enjoy reading The Rise of Women in PoliticsFinding My Voice as a Female LitigatorThe Will to Find a Way — My Unique Path to Law PracticeWork/Life Balance of Lawyer MomsThe Cost of Living as a Woman100th Anniversary of the 19th AmendmentBetty Boone: Steady as She Goes, and Women in the Law. There also are memorial pieces about legal giants Judge William B. Enright and John J. Cleary. Plus, the issue is full of curiosity-piquing feature content (about pirate ships, Shakespearean drama, and professional sports in COVID-19 times), along with our regular columns about legal ethicstechnology, the business of law, and our local law schools, as well as my latest President’s Column, Don’t Let a COVID-19 ‘Gender Tax’ Set Women Back — A Call to Action for Leaders in the Law and Beyond. The team has put together an outstanding issue and I hope you enjoy reading it!

As we approach Independence Day this coming Saturday, this is an excellent time to not only celebrate our founding principles and the rule of law, but also to reflect on the issues facing our democracy in these times, and to feel a sense of pride in the role we play as members of the legal profession. I wish you all a wonderful July 4 holiday.

Please note that the SDCBA will be closed beginning at noon, July 2 in observance of Independence Day. Our virtual office reopens on Monday, July 6. For those who did not see our Special Message to Members on Friday, June 26, we have determined that it is not yet advisable to open our physical space. We assure you that we are preparing for a safe reopening when we can provide for the health and well-being of our employees and members.

Let’s make it a great week.
