As we all know well, it’s election season. To do our part in helping educate San Diego voters, the SDCBA released on Friday our evaluations of candidates running in four contested judicial elections in the March 3, 2020 primary. The evaluations are being covered in local media. Please help us share them with voters ahead of the election.
Our goal in providing evaluations of judicial candidates is to help San Diegans make informed decisions when voting for candidates running to be a judge. As the largest law-related organization in San Diego County, we seek to assist voters by providing neutral evaluations of judicial candidates based on a rigorous vetting process. The Judicial Election Evaluation Committee (JEEC), which prepares the evaluations, evaluates candidates based on 15 criteria. The Committee includes attorneys from broadly diverse backgrounds and professional experiences to reflect a wide set of viewpoints in evaluating candidates running for judicial office. You can read more about the JEEC’s criteria here and its rules here.
I also want to note for you two exceptional programs coming up in February. This Wednesday, February 12 from 12 p.m.-1:30 p.m., the SDCBA will host Smacked: Unveiling Drug Addiction in the Legal Profession. This one-hour competency CLE will feature an introduction by Hon. Katherine Bacal and a discussion moderated by Rebecca Kanter, Esq. with the book’s author, Eileen Zimmerman, whose husband, a former BigLaw firm partner, tragically died after becoming addicted to opioids and other drugs. The second program of note is Where Business, Law & Tech Intersect, presented by Blacks in Technology, an organization dedicated to increasing the representation, participation, and visibility of black women and men in the tech industry. The SDCBA is co-sponsoring this event, which is geared toward entrepreneurs, attorneys, and tech professionals looking to advance their careers, and will feature panelists ranging from boutique law experts to general counsel directing San Diego Fortune 500 companies. The event is on February 20 at 6 p.m. in Carmel Valley. Register here »
Finally, the Bar Center will be closed next Monday, February 17, in observance of Presidents’ Day. Look out for This Week at the Bar on Tuesday.
