Message from the Social Events Chair
Hello all:
My name is Hannah Theophil, and I am honored to serve on the New Lawyer Division’s Executive Committee where I help organize networking and social events for new lawyers in the greater San Diego area. I graduated from Northeastern University School of Law in 2019 and moved from Boston to San Diego shortly thereafter to begin practicing law. I am in my second year of practice.
The NLD is a wonderful resource for lawyers in their first several years of practice. The Executive Committee members work together to provide a variety of activities for its members throughout the year. Join us as we volunteer, earn CLE credits, and publish our monthly newsletter. As the Social Events Chair, my role is to help new lawyers create meaningful relationships through both casual and formal gatherings.
On June 11, NLD lawyers and law students met at Balboa Park to enjoy each other’s company in the sunshine and visit the San Diego History Center. The San Diego History Center is one of the only institutions dedicated to the heritage of a major American metropolitan region and includes permanent and rotating exhibits. Later this year, we also plan on scheduling another group hike due to popular demand after our Torrey Pines hike in the spring.
Coming up next month, we are excited to co-host the SDCBA’s highly anticipated Summer Social on July 13! Themed Bar-B-Q Bash on the Bay, this highly anticipated event at Waterfront Park will feature tasty food, drinks, snow cones, build-your-own-sundaes, photobooth, DJ, and more! You can enjoy all of this while mingling with new and experienced lawyers, including the NLD Executive Committee members. Register today! Also be sure not to miss our Court Practice Series offering 1 free CLE credit on July 8.
The current For the Record edition features advice on bar prep, estate planning, and identifying consumer protection issues in your field of work. Supervising Attorney General Jodi Cleesattle offers advice on litigation writing, career satisfaction, and more in Tips from the Bar.
In an article about mental wellness, Julie Thorpe-Lopez shares how her difficult decision to tell her colleagues about her postpartum depression was not career-ending; in fact, she ultimately made partner at her firm. She shares her story with For the Record in hopes of showing new lawyers that they need not be ashamed or embarrassed by the struggles they face.
The Executive Committee is always available as a resource for NLD members, so please reach out if you have any questions, suggestions, or just to meet. For the Record publishes monthly, contact editor Sara Gold if you’d like to write an article for a future publication.
Best,
Hannah Theophil
