Message from Community Outreach Co-Chair
Hi NLD Members,
I’m excited to be writing this message as Co-Chair of the Community Outreach subcommittee of the New Lawyer Division (NLD) Executive Committee, with Claudia Salinas. If we haven’t met, I encourage you to attend one of our events! We coordinate pro bono and volunteer events for new lawyers and law students in San Diego County.
As a quick introduction, I am a senior associate in the corporate department at Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati, PC, I graduated from Duke Law in 2016, and I moved to San Diego from Silicon Valley in 2020 (yep, I’m part of the pandemic influx). Having moved here recently, I joined SDCBA to grow my network in San Diego, understand the local community more deeply, and better serve the startups and small businesses I represent. Participating on the NLD’s Community Outreach team comes with great opportunities to get to know the community, provide services where they are needed, and network with my peers. Bonus: it’s also a great way to meet, and potentially recruit, local law students. I’m certainly happy I joined, and I hope I have the chance to meet each of you reading this message.
To that end, please make sure to join the NLD and the Wellness Subcommittee for a hike at Torrey Pines on Saturday, March 18 at 9am. It’s a casual and easy way to network, and it’s a really beautiful hike. We encourage you to bring colleagues outside NLD to join, as well. Click here to register.
Additionally, April is Global Volunteer Month, so the NLD is partnering with the San Diego Urban League Young Professionals to hand out bags of hygiene supplies to people experiencing homelessness in San Diego. Be on the lookout for an email in the near future with details about volunteering opportunities and/or making donations for this event taking place on Saturday, April 29.
The NLD Executive Committee also provides many other events and resources for members. For instance, we provide CLE events like our Court Practice Series, the latest edition of which was held on February 15 with Chief Judge Dana Sabraw. We also host social events like the upcoming Torrey Pines hike and a Summer Social (details to come). And, we produce a monthly newsletter, For the Record. The current issue of For the Record includes an article discussing the effect of certain billing practices on an attorney’s practice by Stephanie Germani, an article by John Myers explaining how a new California decision will change consumer protection law, an article with tips for recent February Bar takers by Alex Mann, and a recap of NLD’s Court Practice Series featuring Chief Judge Dana Sabraw by Stephanie Pengilley.
We also encourage NLD members to participate actively in SDCBA events, like the upcoming Judicial Reception on March 30. Click here for more details. While my role as a transactional attorney does not often (or, ever) take me into a courtroom, I highly recommend this event to all of my litigation-focused colleagues — please take advantage of this excellent networking and learning opportunity.
Please feel free to reach out to any of the Executive Committee members and/or event hosts if you’d like to get more involved in NLD activities. We’re happy to be available as a resource for our members, and we welcome questions and suggestions. Specifically, if you have an idea for a pro bono or volunteer project that you would like us to present, please reach out to me at daniglazer@wsgr.com to share your thoughts! I would also welcome the chance to get to know my local colleagues better, so feel free to reach out just to chat or meet for coffee.
Additionally, please contact Co-Editors in Chief, Matthew Spolsky and Linda Nelte, if you’d like to write an article for a future publication at Mspolsky@fwhb.com and linda.nelte@mmpph.com.
And finally, don’t forget to follow us on LinkedIn for regular updates on events. Thanks for being an NLD member, and we look forward to seeing you at the next event!
Best,
Dani
