August Message From the Chair of the New Lawyer Division

Greetings NLD!

I cannot wait to see you all tonight at the SDCBA/NLD Summer Social: Here Comes the Sun at Waterfront Park! This will be our first in-person event in 17 months, with heavy hors d’oeuvres, desserts, a live DJ, a photo booth, a glitter glam face & hair artist, step and repeat, cash bar, and more! Don’t miss the NLD’s Court Practice Series seminar on appellate law on August 26, featuring Justice Judith McConnell and appellate attorney Arezoo Jamshidi. This event, free for NLD members, is worth 1.0 general MCLE credit: register here.

On the topic of appellate law, this month’s Tips from the Bench features recently retired justice Patricia Benke, who in 1987 was the first-ever woman appointed to San Diego’s Fourth District Court of Appeal, Division One. As not only a judge, but also an equestrian and author, Justice Benke offers insight about balancing work with life’s passions.

Another timely topic is freedom of speech beyond the First Amendment: read about the legal and ethical implications of social media self-regulation in our Bench-Bar Media Event Recap. Plus, former web developer Aaron Sibley, now a civil litigator, is interviewed in this month’s NLD Member Spotlight.
