The San Diego legal community lost a prominent member with the passing of the Honorable Edward (“Ned”) Huntington on February 12, 2021. Judge Huntington began his career at the Office of the City Attorney, enamored with the idea of getting trial experience. He was not disappointed when he was assigned a jury trial on his fourth day. He then pursued a brief foray into political campaigns before setting his eye on private practice, as a partner at Huntington & Haviland. During his career he became a certified specialist in Family Law and in Taxation by the State Bar of California. He was President of the San Diego County Bar Association in 1988 and served as Vice President of the State Bar of California in 1994. After 28 years as an attorney, Judge Huntington was appointed to the Bench by then-Governor Pete Wilson and served over 12 years on the Bench before retiring in 2008.
Upon his retirement, he said, “The friends that I made then, I still consider close friends to this day. We played hard and worked hard and I am terribly proud of the honesty and integrity of the entire profession. I know of no other profession any more dedicated to helping others than the law.” (Judge Huntington retires from bench, San Diego Daily Transcript (May 21, 2008).)
Judge Huntington was recognized as a “Legend of the Bar” and you can reminisce with him here about the good times with the Bar’s Over-the-Line tournaments, humor in the courtroom, how attitude and preparation matter in the courtroom, and on the loss of friend, and fellow SDCBA President, Dan Broderick. You can read Judge Huntington’s full memorial here.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the American Heart Association or to Pro Kids First Tee, San Diego.
Remembering and honoring Judge Huntington inspires us twofold: hug your loved ones and remember to help others.
Yours,
Renée N.G. Stackhouse
2021 SDCBA President
