Among the many wonderful opportunities the SDCBA offers its members, the chance to network and connect with judicial officers and our fellow practitioners is perhaps one of the most rewarding. Like many events in 2020, the Bench-Bar Series will look and feel a little different.
Starting on July 8 at noon, please join us for our virtual Breakouts with the Bench series to personally connect with judicial officers and attorneys throughout San Diego County. Following a few words of welcome, attendees will be divided into “meeting rooms” in Zoom with a handful of other attorneys and at least one judicial officer. Each of our five events in the series highlights a specific practice area (Civil, Criminal, Family, Juvenile, and Probate) and offers a unique opportunity for lawyers and judges to build connections and discuss meaningful issues. You can register for the July 8 Civil Law “Breakouts with the Bench” event here »
And since we were unable to host our annual 2020 Judicial Reception in March, we want to take this opportunity to congratulate the 2019 appointees who were not recognized at our 2019 Judicial Reception. Congratulations to Hon. Terrie E. Roberts, Hon. Judy S. Bae, and Hon. Olga Alvarez on joining the bench!
As part of our ongoing commitment to supporting diverse law students and helping the profession better reflect the rich diversity of our community, the SDCBA and Association of Corporate Counsel run the Diversity Fellowship Program, which matches diverse 1Ls with employers for summer employment (or in COVID-19 times, modified employment experiences).
The Diversity Fellowship Program also brings together experts to offer relevant content to the entire SDCBA membership. I hope you will join us next Tuesday, June 23 at 5:30 p.m. for the Diversity Fellowship Program’s Law Students & New Lawyers: Being Present, Visible, and Successful from Day One. SDCBA Board member Warren Den will moderate a panel discussion among Superior Court Judge Tilisha Martin and attorneys Nadia Bermudez and Kim L. Carter. These leaders will discuss tips for new lawyers navigating their careers while building their professional reputations in the community. Please register here »
Finally, I want to call attention to Juneteenth, celebrated across the nation on and around June 19, commemorating the Emancipation Proclamation and the effective end to slavery in all Confederate states in 1865. This holiday has taken on particular relevance during this time of protest and calls for equitable treatment of people of color. I wish you a meaningful observance this coming weekend.
The SDCBA also wishes all the fathers in our community a happy Father’s Day this coming Sunday.
Johanna Schiavoni
2020 SDCBA President
