Yesterday marked the anniversary of my sister entering the world — happy birthday again, Michelle — and the first day of spring. Both events are significant to me.
The former is important because Michelle was the trailblazer in our family. My slightly older sister is both curious and generally fearless. That combination meant that she usually was the person who got to try things first. Because I was able to learn from both her many victories and her few setbacks, I often had, if not an easier path, a clearer one.
Spring, of course, has come to represent new beginnings. In many areas outside of Southern California, that is when winter starts to thaw and buds begin to bloom. For many, it represents a season of hope.
Though different from one another, these two concepts, leadership and hope for what is to come, work best when combined. Those who have the wisdom of experience are most valuable when they share what they have learned with those who are less seasoned. And those who are at the early stages of their career benefit when they are receptive to such lessons from those who have seen some action.
One of the things I love about our profession generally, and San Diego’s legal community in particular, is the pervasiveness of such mentorship. It occurs everywhere. Thank you to everybody who has understood the benefit of this dynamic and the fact that the profession benefits from all lawyers maximizing their skills. And thank you, Michelle, for the many times you showed me the way.
Yours,
