Happy International Women’s Day!
San Diego is home to the Women’s Museum of California and its San Diego County Women’s Hall of Fame. 2021 will see the induction of Hon. Randa Trapp and Genevieve Jones-Wright into the Hall of Fame. Since it was established in 2001, each year has seen inductees from our local legal community starting with Trailblazer Hon. Madge Bradley and including notables like Hon. Bonnie Dumanis, Hon. Elizabeth Riggs, Kate Yavenditti, Justice Judith McConnell, Hon. Lynn Schenk, Betty Evans Boone, Hon. Irma Gonzalez (Ret.), Jerrilyn Malana, and Lilia Garcia.
Jerrilyn Malana also makes our list; the list of fifteen women presidents of the SDCBA, a line that began in 1985 with Hon. Melinda Lasater. Last year, I had the pleasure of interviewing the first and current women bar presidents, Judge Lasater and Johanna Schiavoni, on the SDCBA podcast “Meet & Confer.” You can listen here!
As we move further into March, I want to put a few opportunities on your radar:
- Women in Blue. If you enjoyed Dr. Michele Goodwin when she spoke to the Association on Race, Civil Liberties & the Legal Profession, you are invited to join a conversation, co-sponsored by the SDCBA, about Gender, Race & Violence in American Policing with filmmaker Deirdre Fishel, Dr. Michele Goodwin, and Katherine Spillar on March 23 from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Registrants will receive a link to stream the 88-minute documentary.
- Supervisors Needed. In just 5 days, we already have more than a dozen supervisees using our new Provisional Licensure Program webpage to find a supervisor. If you have questions about what obligations you might have as a supervisor, please visit our information page. You must log in to the SDCBA website to view the list of provisional licensees looking for a supervisor.
- Law Week Contributions. The 2021 Law Week theme is “Advancing the Rule of Law Now” and we need posters and videos! Please encourage children K-12 to submit! They can win money prizes as well as have their contributions highlighted by the SDCBA. The deadline for submissions is April 30, 12:00 p.m.
As much as the work we do for our clients changes their lives, the work we do for the profession changes the lives of the next generation. Let’s make sure that we take the time to give back, to encourage, and to mentor. I can think of no greater success for us than to leave this profession better than we found it.
Yours,
Renée N.G. Stackhouse
2021 SDCBA President
