Thank you to everyone who joined us for the State of the Appellate Courts Address last Tuesday. And a special thank you to Administrative Presiding Justice Judith McConnell from the California Court of Appeal, Fourth Appellate District and Judge Margaret McKeown from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit for their time and insight into issues affecting our appellate courts and practitioners. Both appellate courts are open with nearly all staff and judges working remotely, though their courtrooms are closed. Briefing deadlines have been extended in certain situations. The Ninth Circuit, which has long had its own YouTube channel and videotaped arguments, transitioned to video arguments in March when the coronavirus pandemic emerged. The Fourth Appellate District currently is hosting telephonic oral arguments, and Divisions One and Two will be moving to video arguments in June. You can read more about their COVID-19 responses and updates here and here.
Please join us on May 20 at noon for Part 2 of the State of the Superior Court Address. In anticipation of the Superior Court’s re-opening on May 26, we will again be joined by Presiding Judge Lorna Alksne, Assistant Presiding Judge Michael Smyth, and Court Executive Officer Michael Roddy, who will discuss further changes to court operations in light of the COVID-19 pandemic and answer your questions. You can register for the virtual event, as well as submit questions ahead of time here »
Finally, in response to requests in our recent Member Survey for programs focused on solo attorneys and small firms, mark your calendar for “Coping with COVID-19: Small & Solo Practitioners (Virtual) Town Hall” on May 22 at 12:00 p.m. Three SDCBA members, who are sole practitioners and small firm attorneys, will guide this discussion to address issues and strategies for solos and small firms not just to survive but to thrive. Register here.
Here’s wishing you a healthy and productive week.
