Breaking Out of the Socially Distanced Comfort Zone

Breaking Out of the Socially Distanced Comfort Zone

By Gracie Pollard

I don’t know about you, but I enjoy a solid routine. Routines help me stay on task and accomplish goals. However, being so stuck in your ways that you cannot diverge from routines can have negative effects. This was clearly demonstrated during the COVID-19 pandemic. Many people were content in their routine. Then, when faced with COVID-19 obstacles that not only encouraged change, but required it, some people panicked. They let it be a reason not to do something. On the other hand, some people saw an opportunity. A chance to try something new, and perhaps better. Read More

Equal Pay Transparency Initiative: Harnessing Community Data to Close the Wage Gap

By Tarina Mand

It’s hard to advocate for equal pay when we don’t know how much our colleagues are making. As of now, most of us rely on awkward conversations or close friends in the legal field who are willing to share how much they make a year. Wage transparency is key to be able to advocate for equal pay across race, gender, and other minorities. Read More

Tips from the Bench: Judge Robert Dahlquist

Tips from the Bench: Judge Robert Dahlquist

By Elijah T. Gaglio
Aguirre & Severson LLP

The Honorable Robert P. Dahlquist has been a judge for North County San Diego Superior Court for 18 years. Judge Dahlquist was born and largely raised near Salt Lake City, Utah. As the middle child of five kids, Judge Dahlquist learned many lessons from his family. He remembers seeing both his parents work hard to make a living, even though there were not many working mothers at that time. Often, his father worked two jobs (one during the day and another part-time at night). Even though Judge Dalhquist’s parents were not college-educated, they impressed on him and his siblings that education was the only way to advance, and always encouraged him to pursue education. Legal Ethics for New Attorneys: Trump’s Attorneys’ Fiasco

Time for a Review of an Attorney’s Ethical Duties to Tell the Truth, Show Candor Toward the Tribunal, Provide Counsel Only on Legal or Just Matters, and File Only Meritorious Claims and Contentions

By Richard Hendlin

These cases also present a good opportunity to review various State Bar Act provisions and the California Rules of Profession Conduct [CRPC] that are potentially implicated by these recent developments. On September 29, the SDCBA Law and Medicine section collaborated with the San Diego Region Taskforce of the American Nurses Association (ANA) to host an invaluable discussion on the ethical-legal challenges that on-street nurses face in response to victims of police brutality. The ANA represents an essential group of workers who have provided medical aid to marginalized communities during the 2020-2021 racial equity demonstrations. Not only is the ANA considered an essential part of the healthcare sector, but it also has the mission of optimizing our nurses’ contribution to the health and wellbeing of individuals, families, and communities as a lobbying organization under 501(c)(6). In fact, the ANA is the largest national professional nursing organization in our country. Read More

Practitioner’s Perspective: Domestic Violence Laws

By Laurel Anne Harris
Law Offices of Cynthia Ann Harris

October is not just known for pumpkin spice lattes and Halloween. In 1989, former President George Bush proclaimed October as the month for National Domestic Violence Awareness. An entire month each year dedicated to domestic violence provides legal practitioners and others in the justice community a chance to not only acknowledge the pervasiveness of domestic violence, but to explore ways to advocate for domestic violence victims. October also provides victims — who are now living as survivors —with the chance to share their stories in the hopes of continually shedding light on the dangers of domestic violence. Read More
