Message from Legal Education Co-Chair: Catharine McGlynn
Happy National Women’s Month!
My name is Catharine “Kate” McGlynn, and I am in my third year of practice. I have been involved with the New Lawyer Division since 2021 and this is my first year serving on the NLD Executive Committee. I am the 2024 Legal Education Co-Chair, so I am tasked with bringing you all some top-notch CLE events.
A little about me: I represent employees in employment law matters, with an emphasis on discrimination, harassment, and retaliation. I am extremely passionate about my work, not only because I care about my clients, but because I truly believe in workers’ rights, and I cannot stand a bully. This career is the perfect blend of my passions, and I count myself among the lucky few who get to make a living doing what they love.
I ran for a Member-at-Large position because I have received substantial benefits from my San Diego County Bar Association membership, and I wanted to give back! Fun story—just a few days before I was sworn in, I attended the NLD’s Ugly Sweater Social, which was co-hosted by the bar’s Labor & Employment Section. Having attended law school on the East Coast, I was new to the San Diego legal community, and I used the event as an opportunity to network and connect with professionals in my desired area of law. One of the attorneys I spoke with that night gave me a lead for an employment firm, and a few weeks later, that lead turned into my first job as a licensed attorney. I got to learn from some of the best attorneys in San Diego, and for that, I owe NLD a huge debt of gratitude. That was only my first interaction with NLD. Over the course of the next two years, I attended as many events as I could. My favorite events are from the Court Practice Series, where our local judges provide invaluable tips and best practices for new lawyers.
This year, as the NLD’s Legal Education Co-Chair, I am working hard to bring some great CLEs to our community. My goal is to provide trainings specifically designed for new lawyers. I make it a point to attend as many CLEs as I can, and I am excited to bring you all some really great material in the coming months! [LG1]
Starting the year off strong, here is one of our upcoming events:
- August 1, 2024 – NLD’s Annual Signature Summer Social.
In April, we are also partnering up with the Children’s Book Party founded by Roosevelt Brown for their annual book event, where children receive books for free. NLD will be volunteering at the event to hand out snacks and drinks to those in attendance. As a fellow book lover, I cannot wait to see all the excitement! Join us! (More information to come).
If you would like to get more involved, we are always looking for subdivision members to help coordinate events, and we are actively seeking article submissions for our monthly newsletter, For the Record. Or simply attend an event and introduce yourself! I am also available to answer any questions, chat, or meet for coffee. Connect with me on LinkedIn here.
As it is women’s history month, I would be remiss if I did not leave you with a little wisdom from my personal hero, the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg:
“Fight for the things that you care about, but do it in a way that will lead others to join you.”
Very Truly Yours,
Catharine McGlynn
